Flashback
Flashback is a scene that interrupts the action of the story to explain an event in the past. The most of the plot consists of a flashback how the past is affecting her now. The book is kind of confusing because of this literary device.
Setting
Setting is the time and place in which the story takes place. The story takes place in Ohio and Kentucky at the Sweet Home Plantation. The setting is important because slavery was in the south and that show that they lived where slavery took place. The setting let's people know what the environment is like.

Dialect
Dialect is a regional variety of language: a regional variety of a language, with differences in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. African American people have different dialects than some other people because of their race. Given that Sethe, the main character is black, plays a big role in the way the story is told in the dialogue.
"I got a tree on my back and a haint in my house, and nothing in between but the daughter I am holding in my arms."
Haint is a word of slang has to do with her African American dialect.
